Yep! That's exactly what I did when was single with no kids. My
backpack lasted over 10 years travelling with me at least every month.

No, but this group is lightly used and has a high percentage of
"business" travelers who have different requirements than you
expressed.
I hesitate to suggest some of the region specific groups, but some of
the
asia area groups might have folks that have the kinds of experience you
seek. South American groups might also apply.

Why do you want to travel with just one carry-on? I tried doing that
once. I used the Samsonite backpack that I bought for my laptop. My
backpack cost me around $70 and it serves me well as a laptop carry bag
and I managed to cram my laptop and all my camera and laptop accessories
into it for one trip. The idea worked, but it was a hassle.

So, why bother? Unless the airline has a restriction, go with two
carry-ons if you have to struggle with just one.
