Default Moving back to Italy - taking my stuff with me on the plane

Hello,

I am moving back to Italy in the beginning of July after 3 years in the
US.

I was planning on shipping most of my stuff (clothes, books, etc.). I
will probably have 3 or 4 big boxes.

My friends tld me that it is actually convenient to take all my boxes
with me on the flight... they will charge me for that, but nowhere
close to what I will pay for shipping. And I will have my stuff with me
right away...

Can you people give me any advice on this?

Thanks, it is very appreciated!

Carlo

Call the airline on which you will be flying. I remember on my last US
Airways flight that somebody was about to be charged $50 extra for going 1
pound over the limit.

Send the boxes as unaccompanied baggage may be slightly cheaper.
Either way it is an expensive exercise.
I would only take stuff that I cannot replace and either sell or give the
rest away.

Overweight baggage (stuff you check in with, over the limit you
get with your ticket) is incredibly expensive. Think somewhere on
order of $10 to $30 per pound.

I'm not sure about flying from US, but in many countries there is
unaccompanied baggage services which are in general cheaper than
airfreight. Often the agents have offices somewhere in the airport.
As I recall shipping stuff from South Africa to Canada would cost
about $500 for several big boxes/trunks. It's not going to be
cheap, but books and clothes can be worth quite a bit.
