how to find young people to travel with RE:<I think it is poor advice to an 18 year old female to travel alone -
particularly to Asia. Most countries are not as open minded about women
traveling alone as the US is. Particularly countries with large Muslim
populations, as many countries on the Asian continent are.

I dont think it is bad advice. I have been traveling solo since i was 19. I always have best experiences going solo. As far as Islamic countries go, i never have had problems. You are generalizing SD. Malaysia is a beautiful place with friendly people. Indonesia as well! Bali is a Hindu island. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Burma are majority Buddhist countries! As i said, use common sense. Don't go out alone at night to bars! Dont walk the streets at night alone. Pretty much the same as if you were at home. ALSO, as long as you do your research before you go you know the areas not to go too. Just like anywhere in the world, there are good and bad areas of all cities! I will say this SD, you are correct that some people may not like to see single females alone. Like around NE areas of Malaysia BUT, if you dress respectfully and dont advertise yourself in bikinis and such you will be much more safe than the other travelers in groups running around in bikinis and tank tops. I live in the US and very rarely meet people traveling alone through this country. When i am in Asia, the majority of travelers i meet are out alone and get this, 90% are female! Just my opinion and i know we all have them. Also, i guess some aren't suited for solo travel. You just have to look at yourself and decide. |
