About a two years ago, the check engine light came on for my 1998 Camry V6.
At that time car was just under 8 years old and had 63,000 miles.

Dealer told me it was a bad charcoal canister, and they replaced it for free
under the emissions warranty.

.....Sorry, forgot to add: That study, iirc, came to an end after
only 60,000 miles. At only 60k miles, the rebuilt engines were
dismantled and examined. They should have waited to at least 80
or 100,000 miles. And again, not a single UOA was taken. Just lots
and lots of problems with that old CR study. These are but a few of
them.

Usually _Consumer Reports_ does a good job, but they really
dropped the ball on that one. They haven't done another oil
study since 1996 [chuckle].

Hahahah... I never heard anyone describe an oil change that way! I've
been ruining shirts, staining garage floors, cracking my head and
burning my fingers for years. Welcome to the club. Oops, gotta go - my
oil needs changing.

Considered how long Built_Well spent talking and posting about it before he
actually did it (at least 6 months and hundreds of posts), I am sure that it
was a climax for him after talking about it for so long.

Now that the fireworks are over, I just wanted to point
out *again* that lots of Amsoil formulations contain no more
than 0.08 percent of ZDDP, which is the same percentage of
ZDDP found in API-certified oils.

So SMS was mistaken when he said that the Wikipedia entry on
Amsoil that describes a reason why some Amsoil products are
not API-certified was a "bald-faced lie" (SMS's inflammatory
words).

And if you really want to stay with an API-certified oil
because of some worry about the catalytic converter receiving
too much phosphorous (in the ZDDP), Amsoil's XL line of oils
are all API-certified. You can even see the API star symbol
on the front of the XL bottles imaged on their web site.

By the way, I was mistaken when I said Walmart went to
Amsoil asking to carry its products. Amsoil went to Walmart
offering to provide Walmart with a private branded oil, but
Walmart wanted to carry the Amsoil brand, so Amsoil had to
turn Walmart down. Amsoil didn't want to hurt the sales of
its nationwide network of distributors. This was about 12
years ago.

Like I said, I wish Amsoil had said yes to Walmart, because
I'm sure the oil (which consistently turns up lower engine
wear numbers than Mobil 1, Havoline, Castrol, etc.) would be
priced a lot cheaper if it were at Walmart.

Some locally franchised chains like CarQuest, Murray's, etc.,
do carry Amsoil, but apparently only because select CarQuest
franchisees have individually made deals with local Amsoil
sellers, not with Amsoil headquarters, which has a policy
of not selling to any chain of stores numbering more
than 12--to protect its sellers.

I believe Royal Purple also used to be marketed and sold in
much the same way as Amsoil, until Royal Purple decided to
forsake its nationwide network of distributors/sellers and
embrace big chains.

This was SMS's quote:

> too much phosphorus (which is limited by the API because

Please do not respond to Built_Well. He has made racist and Anti-Semitic
remarks on this newsgroup too many times, and it is time that we cut him off
once and for all.

Guess what I saw today at Walmart. One-quart bottles of 0w-30
Mobil 1 that had the following exact sentence written in big
letters at the top of the bottle:

"Exceeds 5w-30 and 10w-30 warranty requirements"

This is the new green bottle of Mobil 1 with the green
top; the viscosity is 0w-30. Some of you have probably
seen it.

I don't want to good-naturedly raz you Ray O :-) but several
months ago when I first said I was considering using 0w-30,
you were seriously cautioning me against using any grade
other than the 5w-30 grade called for in my manual. Don't
even try 0w-30 was your sentiment.

Well, Ray O, it looks like Mobil 1 agrees with the good
Doctor Haas, who has been advocating the use of 0w-30 oils
in place of 5w-30 and 10w-30 for a long time. I've mentioned
Dr. Haas's FAQ here many times, and have provided a link.

I'll quote the *0w-30* Mobil 1 bottle again:

"Exceeds 5w-30 and 10w-30 warranty requirements"

[chuckle] :-P

Don't feel bad Ray O. There's no doubt that you are an
expert when it comes to Toyotas and an expert when it comes
to mechanics, with all the certifications you have worked
hard to earn, but you are not a tribologist/oil expert :-P

Nobody can be an expert at everything, even though you come close.

So we are to now understand that you are now the mocking expert on oils
since you have read a few articles and oil cans?
