Tire question
Hi gang! Well, time to rotate tires and change oil again. My '06 Camry's
manual calls for simple front-to-rear tire rotation, keeping the tires on
the * same side * of the car. However, my tires are not uni-directional
tires (there is no arrow displayed on the sidewall), so I was wondering if
it would be okay on the Camry LE to rotate its tires front to rear and
criss-cross the rear tires to the front, so eventually every tire will do
service at each of the 4 axles? This would seem to me to provide the most
even wear on each of the 4 tires. Anything wrong with my plan? And why
would the manual instruct owners to rotate tires as if the tires were
uni-directional, even though the tires are not unidirectional? The
manual's method keeps tires on the same side of the vehicle forever.
Thanks very much in advance :-)

Ron,
Michelin is currently recommending an "X" rotation for their tires on new
cars.

I also have an Avalon. Michelins, even with rotation, lasted less than 30K.
These tires don't have a long treadlife.
I just replaced them with Kumho Platinums, assymetric, with 60K treadlife.
So far, they are great.

Next time I plan on driving 250 mph or re-fitting my Concorde I'll
insist on Michelin. Until then I'll go with something that offers a
far better ROI.

Let me be a little more specific. These PARTICULAR Michelins don't seem to
have
a long treadlife.
I have had several sets of Michelins of other types, on other cars, and have
gotten
ca 70K out of them. I am in general a strong supporter of Michelin.
I had looked into buying a Porsche but was put off by the expensive tires
which had to
be changed very frequently ( 15-20K miles or so). They were that way to
give the ride
that many Porsche owners wanted. Same for Avalon, I think.

####Your old Camry didn't come with this type of tire. (and it IS a fairly
expensive tire...I believe they were $185 each to replace) It is VERY
possible
to buy Michelins that will give you 70-80k for some applications.

####The tires were properly inflated, and were rotated. They wore very
evenly and had great traction. I couldn't believe it either, but found them
on
Tire Rack and other users who reviewed tdhem seem to have similar results.

It would be very possible with this one, but - no - I don't smoke the tires.

That's right. The Michelin Primacy at Costco is about $125 w/
installation. And these have a 600 tread rating (approx 60K miles)
with a 60K mile warranty. And if people are saying the cheap
Bridgestones last only 15-20K miles then owners shouldn't pay more
than $35-50 having a Bridgestone installed (otherwise these cheap
tires would cost too much).

Tire Rack shows my originals should have been Michelin Energy MVX4s.
UTQC is 440. They are now $177 each, plus shipping, mounting, etc.

Neither of my new Toyotas came with Bridgestones. They BOTH came with
Michelins.
