I would suggest that the poster take a look at the ocean currents, and
surface temperatures on google.
There is a boundary current that comes from the north, along the east coast.
It keeps a good bit of cool water further south along the east coast, than
the pacific current does on the west coast. the southerly flowing boundary
current on the east coast meets the gulf stream and forms Cape Hatterras.
