Default Learning to use a GPS

At any time you can just press D-> (direct) again. The current way point
will appear. Hit ENT to select that. You will now be on course.

If you are VFR, you don't have to get back on your originally plotted
course. Just hit "direct" from your current position and proceeed. On
some cases you may want to get back on your original course, for
example if you had selected your original course to avoid certain
areas, or to fly over certain areas. Your GPS should still give you a
heading to fly to re-intercept the original course. I don't know about
the KLN89B, but on the GNS430 you simply follow the heading suggested
by the CDI needle to get back on course.

If you attempt to re-intersect your pre planned course, instead of
proceeding direct from your current location.
Make sure that ATC concurs.

If he is flying VFR and was told to resume his own navigation, he
needs no approval from ATC.

You need to get some training on that piece of equipment.
