Default Recreational Pilots (61.96)

I had a question about the recreational pilot rating as defined in
61.96. It appears to be a "junior PPL" kind of rating because I did not
see any restriction on the type of aircraft, only how far one may go
(radius of 50 nm from home airport), only 1 passenger allowed etc. So
does this mean one could be a recreational pilot and fly a 172? I
always had this impression that the RP rating went only with light
sport planes/< 100 hp or something on those lines.

If you keep on reading (and I had to look this up), section (e) gets
more specific on aircraft - you can't act as PIC of an aircraft
certified for more than 4 occupants, is over 180 HP, with retractable
landing gear, etc, etc, etc. So yes, a 172 with fixed gear is ok
(although I think some versions might have over 180 HP?).
