Default Gulp! Wing drop stalls!

<<I was pretty apprehensive about them at
first, as I did not know what to expect. My CFI did it for me once, and
I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought, but I was still pretty
scared. >>

Then you will really enjoy spins ! ;-) My CFI demonstrated them a few
weeks ago and hanging upside-down with the plane caused an interesting
combination of fear and pleasure.

What is HASELL ??

Its the checklist that is used (at our Club anyway) before any
aerobatic or stall maneouvres are attempted (there is a shortened HELL
checklist to complete between maneouvres).

Height (enough to perform the maneouvre and safely recover the
aircraft)
Airframe (revise flight configuration of aircraft prior to entry)
Safety (hatches locked and harnesses securely fastened)
Engine (temperatures, pressures and suction are nominal)
Location (away from populated areas, clear of terrain)
Lookout turn (180 degree minimum rate one turn scanning the
surrounding airspace for traffic)

You probably have another way of remembering it.

I might go up in a A152 and try some spins but I can only just fit into
a 152 (6'1 and 255lbs) so it might get more than a little uncomfortable
up there. The Club is looking at replacing its 152 fleet and if they
get a decent sized replacement aerobatic aircraft I'll definitely give
it a try.

You do not need an aerobatic ac for spins. Since a spin is a stalled
maneuver the loads are very low, the critical part is the pullout or
recovery from spiral dive. The C172 is ok for spin recovery training but
they are easier to spin left because of engine torque. Since you will be in
the left seat your size will have some effect. Be sure and do a full
preflight weight and balance calcutation and try to do it with less than 1/2
fuel. The CG location will effect the recovery characteristics, make sure
you are within the utility envelope and not out the back.

Find a Citabria if you can, I think you will find it a great learning
experience.

Have fun

Yeah thats probably true. We may have got close to 60 degrees a couple
of times but I can't say for certain.
