I ran into a similar situation and it is fine with the FAA.

HOWEVER, your friend's insurance company probably prohibits this. Unless of
course the Citation is a single pilot jet. My chance was in a Lear 60 which
required two pilots...


Be sure to check with them prior to the flight.

.... only the PIC is required to have the type rating.

Actually, insurance may prohibit it in any case. I was once quoted a
policy on my twin that prohibited commercial operations. No problem,
I said - until it was pointed out to me that the insurance company
gets to define what commercial means, and instruction (even when not
for hire) was defined as a commercial operation by this particular
insurer. I opted for coverage from another company.
