Default Woody Brown memorial - Pacifia, CA June 22

Many of you already know but in case you haven't heard, Woody Brown
died peacefully in his sleep on April 16th on his home island of Maui
at the age of 96.

He designed the first modern catamaran based on the ancient polynesian
double hulled sailing canoes, set the record for the longest flight in
a glider plane back in the 1920's that stood for over 20 years.

With the help of a group of friends, Roy Earnest is organizing a
special FREE memorial celebration to honor his amazing and
inspirational life on Sunday, June 22nd at the Sanchez Concert Hall,
1220 Linda Mar Blvd in Pacifica, CA from 4pm until 8:30pm. Anyone who
was inspired by Woody's life is welcome. If you can't be there
yourself (since many of you who will be far away from Pacifica),
please think of Woody Brown next Sunday and, in that way, you can be
there in spirit."I've heard it once said that when a very old person
dies, it's like a big library suddenly disappearing," says organiser
Roy Earnest. "That is certainly true in Woody's case. He was part of
the original crew of modern day big wave surfers who first paddled out
and rode huge waves in Hawaii in the 1940's and 50's and kept surfing
until he was 90 years old and, most importantly, he was one of the
most loving human beings one would ever have the good fortune to meet.
He lived aloha. He loved everybody. He was definitely one of my
personal heroes and I'll never forget him."
Stay stoked... like Woody!

After taking off from the beach below, Woody was also the first glider
pilot to land on top of the cliffs at Torrey Pines. Woody also flew
the Bowlus Super Albatross in one of the last Arvin meets and flew the
same distance (to 29 Palms) as his friend, Johnny Robinson, who was
already making a name for himself with the Zanonia.

Default Williams Soaring Center

I called Rex Mayes at Williams Soaring Center to ask a technical question.
It was a pretty day, so half expected him to be out doing a tow. I was
wrong, instead he'd abandoned his customers yet again to go off galavanting
around, volunteering to fight fires in CA.

No problem, I figured out what I was gonna ask anyway. Oh, and thanks for
fighting those fires.

Bumper, many or us are amazed at all the work Rex does but lets bump
the original thread topic back to Woody Brown's memorial so folks
reading with a threaded reader get to see that important announcement.
