| | Guest | GPS advice, please Hello fellow sled heads,
Luckily for me, my wife intends to buy me (us) a GPS for my birthday. I
have never owned one or used one, but have wanted one for years. I do a lot
of outdoor activities (mountain biking, road biking, motorcycling, fishing,
hunting) in addition to sledding, so I think having one of these babies
would be excellent. Years ago, Garmin used to advertise one of thier units
in a mountain biking magazine, and it had a handlebar mount and the display
could be rotated 90 degrees (for handheld use) by pressing a button. I
would like a mapping model, because I would probably also want to use it
while travelling by car & motorcycle, and I would get a kick out pf plotting
out routes that we ride on the sleds.
I have checked the models that Cabella's has on their website, and I see
that some are waterproof, but I wonder about cold weather ability...
Any recommendations or advice from anyone about what to consider before
buying would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob | |

I use a Garmin E-Map with either 32 MB, 64 Mb, or
128 MB of map memory for snowmobiling..
Map memory size is important for car travel.
Track log size ( 2000 points lasts 5 hrs) while
sledding on twisty trails
The E-Map is not waterproof and in Winter requires
that it be kept half warm in a pocket for battery
life & for liquid crystal readout 'no freezing'.
For use it must lie generally flat (face up) to read satellites.
For sledding I keep it in a thigh bib or arm pocket..
A map bag works fine too if 1/2 warm...
A GPS is a system purchase that can be done in pieces i.e.:
GPS, cables, Maps, PC computer, batteries, & external antenna...
The Garmin E-Map is not the newest model... but is flat & compact..
Down the road a nice buy is the Garmin GEKO 201 with 10,000
point track log but is non mapping Cost $125 Geko 101 is
crippled.
For maps (highway & rural Pit Stop) Garmin Mapsource USA Ver 4
Ver 4 has Pc auto routing & highways,,,
Ver 5 has poor rural Pit Stops & no Autorouting but latest Highways
For woods use the 'old' Garmin Topo use is Best..
