David, I've been to Dominican Republic once and it wasn't a great
experience --- I went to a resort about a 15 minute drive from the Santa
Domingo airport which had an on-site dive shop. I got 2 dives in before I
came down with a gastrointestinal problem called Shigela which made the
usual Montezuma's revenge seem like a tummy ache. I had to go to my doctor
when I got home and even to report to the Dept. of Health. On one of the 2
dives I got to go on, the dive boat was running low on gas and we couldn't
get to the intended dive site so the crew just threw the anchor out into
the coral when they figured we had gone far enough. There are many better
dive locations. Good luck with your wife's open water certification where
ever you decide to go.
Al
