Default Is Vancouver or Seattle better for finding a giant pacific octopus?

Where would I have a better chance on a weekend dive trip of spotting
a really impressive specimen of the Giant Pacific Octopus? Washington
State or British Columbia?

They're in both places. Local knowledge is more important.

Hey Scott...how's diving up there right now? we used to live in
Shelton and my daughter used to dive Hood Canal. We're living in
Honduras permanently now but we may come back next summer so she can
dive the Canal again. We just got back from a trip to Roatan on 26
July.

OK. If I have a pretty good chance of spotting one in the
Seattle/Puget Sound area, I'll head there, if only 'cause JetBlue
services that city.

Thanks a million.

Excellent! Are you from Seattle? Do you know of any dive shops around
there that might serve as sources of local knowledge?

Sunrise is "technical?" I'd call sunrise a lot of things, "uphill" being
prominent amongst them, but I'd be hard pressed to call it "technical."

Or is there something there that I'm missing?

OP's best bet is to get the Koplin hospitality treatment, and hit Sunde
rock.

The hike aint nearly as bad.

True, but I don't know that they are any more difficult than just about any
other place in the sound. Every dive is a timing dive to a certain degree.

In general, yeah. I'd rather do sunrise off a boat, though. Given the
complete package, I'd call it a push.

Hello,

when I was diving there in June, we were at Sechelt, Powell River
(Octopus City), Quadra Island and Nanaimo.
At Octopus City we had no chance of finding one, the visibility was too
bad at that time due to a plancton bloom.
We finally found them at Nanaimo, Madrona Point.
But at first we had to find the wall under water, then some holes in the
wall. If there was a hole with garbage from an octopus meal below the
hole, the chance was pretty good to find an octopus there.

If there is bad visibility at a good place to see octopusses you may
miss the octopusses dens easily.

Try to get a weekend with good visibility.

Bye

Dalco Wall, S. side of Vashon? (In my limited experience this works.)
