| | Guest | Calif speed camera coming? My city is in the process of putting in more red light cameras and I'm
all for it. Just two weeks ago my neighbor's daughter in law was Tboned
by a woman, talking on her cell phone, running a red light. Broken leg
and broken pelvis were the worst of her injuries.
I drive the speed limit and observe traffic signals and signs,
fortunately don't drive in California, so I say let the legislature go
to it. | |

A camera might have got her caught a few times, encouraging her to not
violate the laws...maybe.
Do you speed much right after getting a speeding ticket from a cop? I know
I tend to slow down for a few weeks afterwards.

a law passed that would have made the use of "RADAR AHEAD" signs if a
radar was not in operation.
Reason: It made you obey the law when it wasn't necessary!! | |

| | Guest | Calif speed camera coming? One question, how do they know who is driving the car?...Hunter
Two cameras, one takes the front of the car with the license plate,
the second takes a close up of the driver.<<<<<
Two stories I have heard.
1...Some guy gets a red light ticket for his wife's car. (registered in his
name)
The picture shows the driver, which is his wife's boyfriend.
2...Some towns were changing the time the caution lights stayed on.
Where normally the caution light would stay on 2-3 seconds, they would set
the caution light to only stay on 1 second and then go to red.
That way they could get pictures of many more people going through a red
light.

In my case the sent me a picture of my license plate, a picture of the side
of my car where I could clearly see the light and where the vehicle was in
the intersection, and a third picture of me behind the wheel. They got me.
In Germany the attitude is the owner of the vehicle is ultimately
responsible for the vehicle being used responsibly. So even if it was not
me behind the wheel I still would have been required to pay the fee. Maybe
e the picture of the driver was just a courtesy so I could scold my
illegitimate child that I allowed to use the vehicle. LOL

Then I guess the Red Light Camera would have no effect on you. A normal
person is a different story. Let's use the normalness test on the above
questions.

In the examples I know of the cameras are leased to the
city. Nobody makes any money unless someone is caught.
Whenever it becomes profitable for something to happen
someone will figure how to make it happen. It seems that if
you shorten the yellow interval everyone makes more money..

What year? Mine was 1986. Maybe we could argue that you were driving my
car and I was driving yours?

My information was hearsay. I did not practice law back then. You could be
correct.

Here in Alberta, red light and speed cameras are all over the place. There
are usually (always?) signs posted indicating they may be present. I believe
about a third of the posted intersections actually have the red light camera
installed as they move them around. There is talk of equipping red light
cameras to also handle photo radar but they have to tweak the law or
regulations because there isn't a human operator like there is with photo
radar.
The registered owner of the vehicle gets to pay the fine. There are no
demerit points for photo tickets. The thinking is that it is probably the
owner driving but if not he may well exact a harsher penalty from the driver
than the value of the ticket. I know that was true when I received a photo
of my car speeding when my son was driving. <g> If the fine isn't paid,
neither the driver's license nor the vehicle license plates are renewed.
Are they effective? I think the red light cameras reduce red light running.
I don't think people slow down much if they get a photo radar ticket in the
mail six or eight weeks after the fact - it is simply a tax on impatient
drivers. Since I have never been nabbed by either, I can't be bothered to
look up the facts to confirm or change my opinion.
My .02 worth.
