We don't have to have Cigar police in Canada, of course, because we
can legally buy Cuban cigars. I understand though that lots of
Canadian, English, and other 'off-shore' dealers will ship de-ringed
Cuban cigars in plastic bags to the US (using couriers) with very
little chance of them being intercepted.
Apparently there are smokers over there that are willing to take the
risk.

Did you know that it is a federal crime to have Cuban Cigars in the US?

Bruce are you sure of that? Is that a new law? Two years ago it was
not against the law. Anyone legally entering the US directly from
Cuba was allowed to bring one box of 25 Cuban cigars. It seems
strange to me that it would be a crime to have them here if the Feds
allowed you into the country with them.

It's not, of course... ask Arnold the Governator, Sylvester Stallone,
or Bill Clinton who indulge regularly. FWIW, pre-Castro Cuban cigars
are entirely legal in the USA. It's illegal to import post-Castro
cigars but there are companies in Montreal and the UK making a killing
shipping them to the US.

That avenue has been closed - from the US Customs web site...
"The allowance for bringing in up to $100 worth of Cuban cigars if you
were on authorized travel to Cuba is no longer in effect. In order to
bring Cuban cigars into the U.S., you must have a specific license
issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control."

The Canary Islands produce their own tobacco that is darker and harsher
than what we are used to. I used to smoke it in Spain but cigarettes
made from it were hard to find. It was the cheapest tobacco and came in
small packets to roll your own. My barber and hunting friend would roll
them for me every time I got a haircut. He'd roll it, I'd lick the
paper and he'd finish the job. You could also get Cuban cigars in Spain
for a very reasonable price. When they sold Cuban cigars to Americans,
the shopkeeper would say "from Fidel" with a grin. They enjoyed teasing
Americans about Cuba, a former colony of theirs.
In a bar, Cuba Libres were rum and coke, a Fidel Castro was gin and coke.

I hear most of the "Cuban cigars" shipped from on-line companies in
those places are fakes - not that they are necessarily bad cigars -
just not real Cubans. I hope you're getting what you pay for.
It's estimated that 95% of 'Cuban cigars' sold inside the US are also
fake. Most people can't tell the difference.
I buy my wife's cigars from a cigar store supplied and endorsed by
Havana House which is the only Habanos S.A. authorized Canadian
importer of Cuban Cigars.

They better not have the 'same' leaf or they are illegal in the US.
Actually Ortelia does enjoy some Dominican and Honduran cigars.

I use a credit card - don't have to pay cash, eh?

According to my wife and my friend Larry there certainly is. You'll
have to argue with them, though.

I don't smoke... I'm just a spectator...

Like those ones they hand out when a new baby is born...? <g> At least
most of the parents nowadays have the decency to provide alternative
chocolate cigars...
(Oh, ... I can't eat those either... sigh.)

Sometimes imitations are an improvement on the original.
