You can also find an RV campground guide, like Trailer Life or
Woodall's, either buy or at library. I believe they list closing
dates and phone numbers for most commercial CGs. Columbus Day weekend
is the unofficial closing date for many places in the North East.

It might be worth your while to join Passport America, a camping
"club" that has half-price deals on campgrounds, with each CG setting
it's own terms. You would likely make the fee back in a couple of
nights. Take a look at their site.

Thanks for everybody's advice! Specifically, we'll be renting from
NYC, starting on the 24th of September and finishing on the 8th of
October, so we'll miss Columbus Day. Hoping to go up along the coast
to Boston, maybe across to Niagara, then back down, maybe going as far
as Washington. We're from Europe and this is the first visit to the
states, so we want to see all the sites! One of the reasons we're
going at that time of year is to see all the pretty pretty leaves, so
I guess we expected that there would be quite a lot of tourists
around :/. Is there really that much risk of snow that time of year?

I'd love to hear of any hidden gems that aren't to be missed!
Otherwise I guess we'll pretty much just be picking our campsites at
random and hoping not to end up in any dumps.

Jamie.

That's my thoughts too!! Jamie, Have you used a mapping program and
mapped the mileage between all these points? If you are really going
to see some of the USA, instead of just driving through it, you need 2
weeks just to do NYC, Boston and the leaf colors in the mountains of
New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut,
Massachusetts).

As far as Washington DC, if you do go there, the 1st thing to do is
get on a tour bus, like Gray Line. The same applies for NYC, Boston,
and if you go there, Niagara Falls. I have personally taken the Gray
Line tours in all of them. You'll see more in a day doing that than
you can possibly find and do on your own in a month. As an example, I
have lived near Atlanta, GA all my life, and this summer took a Gray
Line tour of Atlanta. I saw more different things in 12 hours than I
had seen in 55 Years just wandering around on my own.
