The exact information that goes into determining each manufacturer's
towing-weight rating for each of their vehicles is probably closely-held
proprietary information. In general, though, the size of the engine, the
type of transmission, and the rear-axle ratio are major factors.

In all probability, *nothing* undesirable will happen *immediately* if the
towing-weight rating is exceeded. However, repeatedly exceeding it will
lead--at a minimum--to a shorter lifetime for the major vehicle components.

Yes, I can. Plainly and simply, even in terms someone like you can
understand:

The manufacturers and salesmen of the product you are considering determine
the tow-weight rating of a vehicle. This may or may not be correct. You
see, they are slightly biased, as they are trying to sell you something.
Their only motivation is to get you to sign on the dotted line, and your
safety is somewhere down the list from there.

If it is exceeded, you either wear out prematurely, dog along at 15mph under
the speed limit, break down, or go off into a ditch, cliffface, guardrail,
oncoming traffic or other dangerous situation.

Now, what part of the above do you NOT understand?

Ralph, where can I find the real world independent testing you
mention?

I ask because I've driven an exact duplicate of my coach without the
system, and the difference between that and my Banks equipped coach is
much more than 2 to 4%.

You are talking diesel this one is the Ford V10 gas, and has very little in
the way of performance improvements available. OTOH, with diesel, almost any
of the engines can handle 100 extra horses by simply changing the fuel
plate, the problem is extra heat that must be dissipated and that is where
Banks comes into the picture by also adding a waste gate and turbo to
channel more of the heat away from the engine.
