This is not a simple app, it's like comparing MS Notepad or Wordpad with
Word, about the only common thing is that you can write using it. I wish I
could say that if you don't need all the extra features and the advantage of
draw layers, multiple routes displayed, then stick with SA# line or MnG.
Unfortunately they are gone, and most likely won't be back. You can still
find them on eBay, or just stick with MS S&T which is probably the next best
thing.
There is a file named "SA2004Tutorial.exe" in the C:\Program Files\Street
Atlas USA 2004 folder that has some helpful basic tutorials.
If you go to the Draw Tab/Files you will see the draw files that are in the
current mapfile. This is where you control which draw files are written to
when you make a draw object (mapnote, symbols, highlights, etc.)
- The box on the left simply displays the different draw files by being
checked.
- Note the Active column. Only one Draw file and one Road file can be
active at a time.
- Note the Lock column. If this is checked, it can be made active, but you
can't modify it without getting a warning to unlock it.
- If you want to find out which layer an object is in, just start unchecking
the layers. When it disappears, that's the one the object is in.
You'll have times that you forgot what is in a draw layer, because you
didn't name it so that you'd remember (I do this all the time). If you
can't tell what or where the object is, uncheck all layers except that one
and double click on it. The screen will re-center with the object either
centered (if it's only one), or within the screen area (if multiple
objects - look around the edges and hopefully you'll see the objects)
- If you rt mouse click on a draw or road layer, you can delete or rename it
here.

You don't need to have separate map files, unless you just want to group
some draw and route layers together for some reason. I often am doing
something different and don't want it in with what I call my default
mapfile. However, it might be handy to group them by trips, or something
like that. Remember, you don't have to create a new one and add everything,
unless you just don't want everything in the new mapfile. You can simply do
a "save as" using your default file, and you've then got a new mapfile with
everything in it.
When you get Topo (suggest you want for Topo 5 due out in the spring), you
can use both Topo and SA2004 maps side by side in it's split screen. It's
real slick because the panning and mouse is mirrored in the opposite screen.
You can also control zoom levels in each screen. It's kind of need to use
with a GPS because you see yourself going down the road in 3D. You can also
use their SA10 photo maps with it.

| | Guest | DeLorme SA2004 Additional Draw Symbols I load everything to the HD, the apps run much faster that way. If you can
load one, then you can use the CD drive for the other, all you have to do is
tell T4 or XMap 4.0, where the data is.

| | Guest | DeLorme SA2004 Additional Draw Symbols The T4 data for a region is less than 600MB a region if that helps. If your
laptop is pretty new, you might consider getting a USB2 external HD. If you
don't have a USB2 port, you can get a PC card. The HD is handy form backups
and installing software that you might use on a desktop and the laptop.

Thanks Dan. I have such a hard drive, but just use it for backups. I
find I don't really like attaching a lot of stuff to the computer
for regular use...it never gets attached, then you need it and it's a PIA
to go get it, set it up.
The CD just stores in the CD drive ready to use whenever I want. Maybe I
oughta get some of the 8GB of pictures off the machine and onto the
backup hard drive though..... <g>

Same here, and the extract program allows you to copy all map data or just
specific areas. SA2003, AAAM&G and MS S&T all reside on my hard drive. | |

| | Guest | DeLorme SA2004 Additional Draw Symbols I completely agree with you on this, it is a bit of a pain, and have sent in
an enhancement request for it. Wouldn't hurt for anyone wanting this to
turn it in. In the meantime, use the map tags for the finds, and then go to
the draw where you can move them around, convert the ones you want to
mapnotes, remove the ones you don't want (individually or all at once), and
add other info to the mapnote.
Last year I asked for the ability to convert map tags from the find to a
mapnote without having to copy the info. That did get into SA2004 as the rt
mouse "Copy to Draw Object" option, so they do listen. I also asked for
the select arrow to be able to lasso more than one draw object and perform
the same action on all of them. That also is in 2004, though I don't think
they advertised it.

| | Guest | DeLorme SA2004 Additional Draw Symbols Turn it in to sales@delorme.com . The more folks that turn in an
enhancement request the more chances we'll get it. Except for the new
mapdata for SA7-9, don't think that one will fly, but it might be worth a
try;>)
