Thread: RV: Balance the trailer tires?

Default RV: Balance the trailer tires?

Les Schwabb asked me if I want the tires on the trailer balanced (got 4 new
ones). In said "Yes". He smirked at me.

I'm thinking the less vibration the less all those little screws come
un-done. Did I just blow 28 bucks on a wheel balance? Is it worth
    anything?

I just had a bad tire replaced at the factory on my Excel fiver. They told
me there that you need to have the trailer tires balanced.

    You did a good thing!

I'm retired with 42 years in the tire business. I still have the
capability to mount tires at home. (Pretty well equipped farm shop.)
After mounting 4 trailer tires today, I loaded them up and hauled them
over to be balanced before installing them on the trailer.
I balance everything except garden tractor tires; travel trailer,
    utility, horse, etc.

I think you mean a Les Schwabb employee. He needs to be re-trained.

No...No...I'm sure it was Les himself. LOL

So what's the difference between a travel trailer and the trailer you
mounted those 4 tires on today...and my 5er? You say you don't balance
tires for a travel trailer. I'm just trying to understand the difference.

Oh, yes...that is a semicolon. On my screen it looked like a comma.

My Dexter brake drums are extremely out of balance. Unless the wheels
    are
marked, mounted and then balanced it is a complete waste of time and
money for me. Others have disagreed with me before.

I just got back. No, all 6. Total bill was $217. I got the tires from
them 3 years ago. I must say they will try to please. My problem with
them (had the same problem 3 years ago) is that the tire guys don't
know ANYTHING about truck tires. I had to show the guy how to remove
the wheel covers. He had the proper wrench, he just didn't know how to
use it. Sorta understandable since they deal mainly in autos. Also, it
shimmy's above 65 mph due to unbalance (same problem last time). I
gave them 2 tries last time before I took it to another place to have
them balanced. I will pay the extra $15 and have the other shop do it
    right. :-(

A VP for Discount Tire is a friend of mine. In fact, he bought my
home when age and empty nest hit us. Hellova nice guy and I have been
a customer since early 80's. Never been disappointed.

Like I said, they try to please. The service writers were friendly and
respectful and took care of the problem the best they could. They just
need to get a better tire balancer and train the "tire guys" on
    trucks, or not do trucks.

The drums were out of balance since new. Dexter makes no attempt to
    balance
them, so why would it make sense to buy 4 new ones?
Do you know of anyone that ever checked the balance of their drums? I
    did,
and have attempted to relay the information to anyone that has an open
    mind.
