Default Least expensive tourist travel from Newark,NJ?

I'm thinking of seeing the sights in NYC for a few days. I figure that
it's cheaper to stay at a Newark, NJ hotel and travel into NYC each
day, rather than staying in NYC. What is the least expensive way to
get from Newark to NYC? (Probably from the Newark airport vicinity) Is
there another convenient city nearby to stay in and travel to NYC each
day?

Thanks.

I don't know where the hotels in Newark are, but the PATH train takes
you from beneath Penn Station (Nwk) to Downtown or Midtown Manhattan in
about 20 minutes (you have to change trains to get to Midtown) for $1.50
($1.20 if you buy a 20-ride "QuickCard" ticket; any number of people can
use a ticket).

The Hyatt Regency in Jersey City is right across the street from the
PATH station that's 5 minutes from Downtown, i.e. the World Trade Center
station. Other chain hotels are nearby. To get to Midtown, you'd either
walk over to a different PATH station or take the train back one stop
and change.
