If the conditions were that bad, you wouldn't have so many people
wanting to get transit jobs. How does transit compare to, for
example, working in a Chinese coal mine?

Why a Chinese coal mine? Why not an Appalachian one? Why so far away?
Why not an NYPD car, an NYFD truck, or a Sanitation truck?

It was the harshest job I could think of on short notice, although
since the OP seems to think transit jobs are as bad as any in recorded
history, I could certainly have come up with some better examples
without even having to go back more than 65 years.
