Why not make things convenient for the customer? You could always give
a friend a token. Why make MetroCards less convenient? The 6 rides for
$10.00 discount is available to more people. Any number of people can
ride using one MetroCard. The limit of four transfers exists because of
softwear limitations.

Metro-North allows any number of passengers to share a 10 ride ticket.
Passengers can share the discount. I'm not sure if they still do it,
but the MBTA in Boston let passholders bring a friend along for free on
Sundays.

When unlimited MetroCards were introduced Rudy Giuliani made it clear
that it was OK to lend the card to someone when you weren't using it. I
think that as an former prosecutor he has an aversion to rules that
can't be enforced. On the other hand Metro-North states that monthly
tickets are not transferable. Male or female is indicated on the ticket.
This reduces the number of possible ticket sharers by 50%.

A few days ago, posted in the Chambers-to-PATH corridor, was a lengthy
regulation on multiple Card-users. It was late, so I didn't stop to read
it, but at a glance it looked like they were codifying rather than
changing the existing practice

The stock footage channel 11 used in their pre-strike coverage last
night showed people using cards and people using tokens.

You can use tokens on the Roosevelt Island tram, they used to say.
