Default 1st visit from UK

Hi

My family of 5 adults will be in NY early April.
A few questions:
as there are 5 of us a taxi is difficult, is the airtrain from JFK into the
city(we are staying Lower manhatten) a good option?

is it advisable (or possible) to buy metro day tickets in advance from
overseas?

I am going with my son to Stony Brook University overnight. Is there an
alternative route other than train from Penn station?

thanks for looking

Laurence

Airtrain doesn't go into the city; it takes you to one of two subway
stations, each of which is near the end of a quite long ride into
Midtown (and one of which is on the now severely restricted A train).
You'd have quite a walk from the Airtrain station in Jamaica to the
subway platform for the E or F.

If you're staying at a hotel, they might have a bus or other transport
direct from the airport.

I doubt it, but there are ticket machines in every station and they take
credit cards.

It's about a 70-minute drive.

thanks for the reply Peter, I've decided that the best way from JFK to our
hotel would be a private shuttle.

thanks
