By subway, you're looking at about an hour no matter which way you slice
it. The D, F, and Q trains all run to Coney Island now. The N will
resume operation to Coney Island at some point in the future, but that
doesn't help you much for this coming Monday. Probably the fastest
route is the N to New Utrecht Avenue-62 Street, and then the D the rest
of the way to Stillwell Avenue-Coney Island. Since you're coming from
the Upper West Side, it's probably just as easy to take the D all the
way to the end and avoid jockeying for transfers twice. The other
subway option worth mentioning is the B to the end (at Brighton Beach),
then a cross-platform change to the Q for its last 3 stops. This last
option is how I personally would go at that time of day.
I would specifically NOT drive if I was looking for speed on a Monday at
5pm.
