I like riding pre-war subway trains, too, but there are limitations
on running them. Being now unique specialized equipment, replacement
parts may be hard to find. Being old they are at risk of breakdown,
blocking revenue trains. They may not be able to travel as fast
as modern trains, so care must be used not to block revenue trains.
Usually runs get at least one extra supervisor on board which is
a cost, not to mention prep work in the shop. If the trains run
in regular revenue service, security is required to prevent
vandalism. Lastly, running the trains introduces more wear nad
tear and them.
In Phila, fantrips on normally run only on Sundays (a few party
trips late at night). Subway fantrips use express tracks or the
Ridge spur which isn't used on Sundays. I don't know how many
rush-hour or weekday only express tracks are available in the
NYC system, plus Sunday headways are still pretty tight on trunk
portions of lines.
Sadly, it's been a while since the Phila BSS train ran. On
its last fan trip several motors were cut out and the train
chugged along slowly. |
