Alternatively, take the A only as far as Broadway-Nassau, transfer to
the Bronx-bound 4/5, and transfer at 59th Street to the W. It's two
transfers, but the trip will probably be a hair faster and the two
walks combined would still be shorter than the Times Square transfer.

But your route is fine. Don't bother with the G.

Take the A from Howard Beach, transfer to the F at Jay Street (across
the platform). Take the F to 34th St/Herald Square. Go upstairs (use
escalators on the F train platform) for the W to Astoria.

Plenty of people ride the "A" with luggage and "I'm on vacation" looks
and live to enjoy their visit and tell their tales. You'll probably be
very uncomfortable traipsing through a street festival with luggage,
though. - Isaac

Me neither , though I did have a 20 minute wait at Rockaway Blvd
for the train that goes to Rockaway (and hence Howard Beach). It got
me wondering whether the MTA actually realise they have a major international
airport to serve or they just consider it an unimportant curiosity in the
suburbs.... I haven't been to NYC for a number of years now, has the A
service to rockaway improved at all?

The A train takes about 35 minutes to reach Manhattan from the Howard
Beach station. To Columbus Circle, it's about 50 minutes. (At night,
when the A makes local stops, add about 6-7 minutes.)

The Q10 takes 35-40 minutes just to get to Kew Gardens, barring
unusually heavy traffic, and from there it's another 25 minutes or so
into Manhattan on the E or F.
