Default Is NYC the only city in the world with 2 subway systems?

Ok, the subject line may be a bit confusing but for me as a foreigner
it
seems that new york has 2 totally seperate subway systems. I'm
refering to
the subway itself and the PATH system. You effectively have 2 totally
seperate metro systems run by different authorities running different
equipment
underground in the same city. Is this unique?

No... lots of cities have subway lines with incompatible equipment, but
if you're talking specifically about different operating agencies, I
can think of:

Philadelphia - SEPTA, PATCO
San Francisco - BART, MUNI Market Street

You could also consider a whole load of European systems where
there's some "subway" service by the commuter rail system and metro
lines. Paris has the Metro and RER (RATP, SNCF). German cities U-Bahn
and S-Bahn, etc.

London has the Underground and Docklands Light Rail. You might object
that they have through ticketing but through ticketing also extends to
the mainline railways.

Newark has PATH and the city subway :-)

Actually Robert Moses thought about it.

Going back to the original question, Tokyo has two separate subway systems--
the Teito Rapid Transit and a subway system operated by the Transportation
Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TOEI). The former operate 8
subway lines; the latter 4.

Tokyo has two subway agencies, JR Railways, and the Seibu
department store group owns rail lines within Tokyo, and probably others
I don't know about. You can buy a debit card to use everywhere, and
the money is given to the appropriate agency. Too bad they can't make
it that seamless here, instead of making us carry multiple tickets / cards
between every agency or company running the lines we use.

(I've carried at the same time tickets/cards for NJTransit train, PATH,
MTA, and the DeCamp Bus. In theory could carry extra ferry tickets,
or HBLR, but usually don't bother to buy extras.)
