Is the posiblility of the F express in Brooklyn ever coming back dead? On
the viaduct, after 4th Avenue until it goes back underground at Carrol
Street, the MTA has removed all of the third rails on the ex[ress tracks!
What are they up to now?

Viaduct rehab includes removing third rails and doing nothing else to the
tracks or track bed? Sounds strange to me.

: I'm not sure what you mean, it's a multi year project. I've driven on
: the Gowanas recently and saw construction rigging on the outside of the
: structure.
The construction rigging has been there for a while. What they have done
is placed dividers made of wood frames and chicken wire between the
service tracks and the express tracks, sometimes taking them down and
doing work only on the express tracks. The only work that looks like that
has been dones was to remove the third rail from the express tracks. The
actual running rails and ties are in place, the filler material is in
place, so nothing is being done to the structure from the top (track) side
of the structure. I'll look again tomorrow to see if there is anything
else that is visible.

The tracks (express and local) may be removed also. The work is
supposed to last about 4 years and at various times 4th Ave passengers
will board trains on the express tracks using temporary platforms on
top of the local tracks and Smith-9th will be completely closed for 9
months. More removal of the express third rail may start Sunday when
the G stops switching to the express and makes all local stops to
Church. If/when the work completes around 2013 the G extension will
be evaluated and may be made permanent and F (or V) express becomes a
possibility.

Same here. I don't normally post to say that, but I just don't know
much about what goes on in Vince's part of Brooklyn.

I don't ride the Brighton line very often, but I did a couple of weeks
ago and was surprised to see that the Coney Island-bound platforms are
totally gone. It looks like the rehab (which I was aware was going
on) consists of "tear it down and build a new station". It also
appears that the Q switches over to the express track - at Sheepshead
Bay all trains headed towards Brighton Beach stop on the express side.
I was on the B so I didn't notice exactly where this is done.
IIRC, part of the reason for doing this is to widen the platforms so
they won't be so scary to stand on in the narrow parts. Of course,
Cortelyou is even narrower in spots and nothing is being done there.

That's not going to be easy to do.

Tell me about it for over two years already the neighborhoods by those
stops already making a stink. After all folks will lose part or all of
their backyards etc
