Default 1996 Nissan Sentra timing belt/chain?

I just got a used Nissan Sentra 1996. My friend suggest me to check the
timing belt that may need replacement. I brought to a mechanic he told
that it has timing chain! Which one is correct? Chain or belt. In either
case how do I know when to get it replace to safe the engine? When I got
this car, the odometer read 124939 miles and it is not working anymore.
Looks like it stop since the beginning of this year 2005. The mechanic
suggest to fix the odometer in Nissan dealer cause only they can do it!
What may be the cause odometer stop working? And when to change the
    timing belt/chain?

the '96 sentra was built with a GA16DE engine or a SR20DE engine, both
of which have timing chains. no need to replace a timing chain unless
    severe symptoms occur.

remember Odometer fraud is a crime punishable by 15 years in prison and 50K fine, fix odometer and add whatever miles it failed to count until now, ask
Nissan dealership to add up at least 10K miles
In NYS, that only applies to second-hand dealers. In any case, a broken
    odometer is not fraud.

Dear all, thanks for the reply. The speedometer is working normally. Only
trip and odo meter doesn't show any activity.

It seem this happen no long ago because in the widshield there is sticker
for oil change due on mileage 127xxx and the odo meter just read 1249xx
which mean it stop just 200 mile after oil change. Another information is
the due oil change is March 2005.

Since I bought this car it is already broken.

I contacted the dealer but it is too far from my place and it is very
    costly too.

Any suggestion how to fix them? Or is there any problem if I let it as it!
Can I contact the dealer for this problem?

I am not american and this is my first car so no much knowledge about law!

Many of us are not American. This is a world wide group - for example,
I'm in the UK. I assume you mean the USA; I'd suggest you post your
state, as I think laws vary between the states.

Check the news groups. There may be one where you can get some legal
advice - there are some for English law.

You just found yourself a good, honest mechanic. He could have ripped
you off but chose not to. You should stick with him for your car work now.
