"Scenic" is all in the eye of the beholder, but here is an alternate you might
enjoy.
Take US 287 north from West Yellowstone to Helena (182.4 miles). Then I-15 to
Shelby (163.6 miles). Then US 2 to West Glacier (126.6 miles). We thought
some sections of each of these legs were scenic while other sections were not
(wheat fields). We drove this route from West Glacier to West Yellowstone last
August towing our 35' 5er with no problems.
Other alternates would be US 191 from West Yellowstone to Bozeman. This route
cuts through the edge of YNP and in places follows the Gallitan River. You
could also take US 89 from Great Falls to Browning. There are also several
other alternatives, but I have not been on them.
