Default Long Hauling

Last Monday I put up a link to a cabbie talk program
hosted by two cab drivers which is on for one
hour once a week.

Tonight they were commenting and warning other
drivers that the Taxi Authority was monitoring the
tunnel and stopping the cabs and writing out tickets,
$500 a ticket.

Also the Taxi Authority cancelled their monthly
meeting for tomorrow (4th Tuesday of each month.)
It was said that the possible motive was the surcharge
for gas, as it is supposed to be cancelled if gas
fell below $4 a gallon for a month, which it has.
So visitors will have it stuck to them until the
next meeting.

Also there are 18 cab companys in Las Vegas.
New drivers for the Desert Cab Company have
to pick up the complete gasoline bill the first year,
each year afterwards the company picks up a
percentage until the fourth year, then the
company picks up the whole tab. Unfortunately
Nevada is not a right to work state, so they
fire the drivers after four years.

Next Monday, I'll put up a reminder and a link
if anyone wants to listen to the show on the
internet. It would be fun if some AVLVers called in.

Default Long Hauling

Baf:

While I think long hauling or tunneling really stinks, I hope LV Metro
doesn't concentrate on it, do they? Only Taxi Authority?

Do you have any statistics that back up the claim that they fire the cabbies
after 4 years? Not that I doubt you, but I would like to learn more about
that.

If you get a good cabman, get his phone number. Smart ones carry a cell
phone and will come get you if you are still close by. Supposedly I am told
it is not legal, but in order to make a living I doubt any of them can be
completely legal anymore.

One tough business. I think I would rather run a convenience store on ML
King and Washington.

Default Long Hauling

I really don't have a complete answer, but one cabbie
complained about the same thing, he objected to
being pulled over with a passenger. When the
passenger got into the cab, the driver asked the
passenger if he wanted the quick way or the cheaper
way, the passenger said the quick way.

This was told to the Taxi Authority Officer and
no ticket was issued.

More long hauling is being done because of
the increase in fare/fuel. What has happened
for many trips the price has gone up to $14
vs. a lessor amount. Passenger gives the
driver $15 for a $14.70 trip and tells him to
keep the change.

Get the tab over $15, passenger gives the
driver a $20 and tells him to keep the change.

The increase charges leave a bad cut off
point for rounding up to the tip.
