Default Local phone service?

Who is the main local phone service provider? I want wired service at home,
not VoIP. Google results are Qwest or AT&T but they don't recognize zip
89131 as a service location.

Thanks,
Joe J.

Just a follow up question...are all calls in the valley local calls? Back
here we are out in the sticks so with a few exceptions, almost everywhere we
call is a local long distance call and charged extra.

Thanks,
Joe J.

Nothing against you per se, but why do people even want a landline anymore?

Long distance? Insanity.

Every major cell carrier has excellent reception in Vegas, and everyone has
a cellphone anyway, so why waste money on another phone?

On another tangent, I'm spending about an hour a day talking to friends in
China on Skype. Video calls via a simple computer program are here today,
and its free. To China. Free.

I'm old fashioned is the simply answer. I have a cell phone and keep it in
the car for emergencies only. I wouldn't even have that if I didn't have a
catalytic converter overheat and cause a car fire in the middle of nowhere a
few years back. It costs me $7 per month plus any minutes I use. I still
like having a base phone with memory, speaker-phone etc. If I'm not home,
leave a message. Nothing is that important that somebody has to talk to me
while I'm out. I don't want to sound older than I am, but I can't stand
cell phones. I have a hard time hearing them, the multiple menus are a pain
and they are too small. It stays in the car and I never carry it with me.
I can't switch to VoIP because it doesn't work well with my broadband card,
or at least not back here in WI. My Internet access is via the card plugged
into a high-speed router and that feeds the home network. I have another
year on that contract. Maybe out there I'll have a stronger signal and can
try again.

Where I currently live, the only other choice for Internet was satellite and
then went out everytime it got a little too cloudy. No cable or DSL
available.

Hope that answers your question.

If you plan on getting cable instead of satellite the phone service is
cheaper to bundle with Cox.

Embarq indeed and we are pretty happy with them.

When I moved into the house here I was able to transfer the utilities back
into my name from when I lived in the Lakes. Originally I was going to skip
getting another landline but as I began looking at everyone's deal for
Internet, TV, wireless phone, etc I did the math and EMBARQ came up with a
good plan.

$29 for the landline.
$60 for two cell phones with 800 minutes and unlimited text on one, 50 on
the other--far more than we need.
$65 for DISH with three DVR hookups. (More on that later)
$24.95 for 1.5 mps DSL.

The landline works great mostly for fax but also for a local number. My GF
now has two cell phones but will drop the LA (Verizon) one as soon as her
contract ends. NO charge between her phone and the house or between our
cell phones. She uses the office phone at work or the house phone and I use
the cell phone to call her at work on her cell phone, so we really save the
minutes and have never gone over.

The 1.5 mps is all the 'speed' I need.

EMBARQ has agreed to extend its new complete package agreement with me and I
will receive a $39.95 credit on my DISH bill every month. I have Tier 200
(got to have my Fox and Prime Ticket).

We think we have a pretty good deal. Now if we could only lower the
electric....

my old moto razor with the hole in the case is still hanging in there so
that's my phone of choice.
I'm still using the first generation razor also. It seems to work ok,
though I had a speaker problem at one time and couldn't hear unless I
put it on speaker phone. They replaced it for free. What I like about
the razor is that it fits in your pocket, and you forget it there. Oh,
but I hate the fact that the ring volume is low...I miss many calls
because of that.

I keep a wired phone for health reasons. My cellphone gets lousy
reception at my house (a block away, it's okay, just not at the house).
My cable service has been known to go away for 4 to 5 hours at a time.
With a history of heart problems, I can't lose phone service for that
long a time and be comfortable with it. The cable company tells me
that, even in an outage, the phone service is good for fifteen minutes
after the cable goes down (don't understand how this could be, but
that's what I was told), but that's not enough.

Two ambulance rides have made me very aware of my phone service and how
reliable it must be.

We all had Razr's when they were new and all the rage. Now they suck
compared to the IPhone. It's twice as big, brighter screen, louder audio,
etc. The old Moto RAZR is like eating at the Circus Circus buffet, compared
to the Bellagio Iphone.
That's what I dislike about the iPhone...twice as big AND twice the
weight, and costs more monthly. Other than that, it's a great device.
