Default How active is Vegas

I'm heading to the desert city this weekend. From some of the
posters, it sounds like the town is pretty empty, although some of the
news articles say that the occupancy rate is still near 90%.

Anyone have any input on this?

I got home from Vegas less than an hour ago after 6 days and 5
nights. It was a zoo, as usual. Even on Monday night the strip was
nuts-to-butts with pedestrians. Don't expect to find any tumbleweeds
blowing down empty sidewalks.

Even when it's "dead" it is still packed with people. Those people just may
not be gambling or spending money.

Pretty much have to agree with what others have said in response.

What you will find is:
The places that are always busy are still going to be busy - IE: MGM Grand
is still going to be shoulder to shoulder people going down the aisles at
night.
The restaurants, buffets and clubs that normally have a big line will still
have a big line.
The places at the ends of the strip (Mandalay Bay and Luxor at one end,
Riviera, Hilton and Sahara at the other end) are going to be quieter than
usual and will have an empty feel.
The heart of the strip (Mirage/Venetian to Paris/Bellagio) is still going to
have a lot of people and there will be big bottlenecks and chokepoints for
people shuffling along.
Fremont Street will still have lots of people roaming around.
Downtown casinos will be similar to the strip where the quieter ones are
going to be a little quieter but the busier ones are still busy.

Basically if you go to places/casinos that are normally not as busy as other
places it will seem very empty and quiet. Otherwise you probably won't
notice any difference.

YUP.

And Europeans are indeed taking advantage of shopping. I was in Primm on my
way home from LA last week and the place was busy for a weekday afternoon.

The economy is a mixed bag an people will always take advantage of bargains
when they can. Meanwhile, despite all the roaring and screaming, people are
still driving, still filling up the tanks and still taking vacations.

And CHP was really writing tickets on I-15, SR 138 and SR 18!

If it was a roadside hotel with no other sources of income, I'd say they
were either making a killing at the high rate, or were losing their
rumps at the low one. In LV, of course, virtually any room, casino-type
restaurant or buffet and even many shows are there to draw in folk in
the hope of them gambling. My best guess is that both the local and
Strip casinos are still making money- just less of it. I don't trust
accounting reports, since making books say what you want is the things
legends are made of. The places that are most likely taking a real hit
are the one-note places like restaurants that are not associated with
gambling.

BTW, I've found that at least some of the VP pubs actually GIVE the food
service space to restaurant entrepreneurs to meet NV gaming commission
regulations, and the only benefit for the forfeited space and utilities
as is an occasional comped meal for a player at the bar. Apparently,
there's enough money in just the VP machines at a bar to permit that
type of concession.

We eat occasionally at the PT's just south of Horizon Ridge. The Noon
patrons outside of the bar area could surely not be enough, even gross,
to pay for the cook and waitress. IMHO, the food operation there is
almost entirely supported by the VP activity.
