My wife and I are planning a trip in November and would like to stay
downtown but she's worried about ending up in a real dump. She doesn't care
if it's fancy just clean and secure.
Any downtown hotel reviews would be appreciated.

We stayed at both the Vegas Club and Main Street Station.
Both are far from a dump, clean and secure. I'd give a slight edge to MSS.
The Plaza has been hit or miss...mostly miss as reviews here go. You can't
go wrong with MSS.
Just ask for the 'Elmer Suite'.

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I stayed there for a few days this Spring,
and it was nice: not fancy, but clean, didn't stink, and the casino
wasn't overrun with riff-raff.
Good buffet.

One other note about staying at MSS. You can take the walk-bridge from MSS
to The Cal, walk out the Cal at the SE corner, cross the street and head
into the back of Binion's. Walk through Binion's to the front, and you are
in the heart of Fremont Street. Total outside paces under 100. I only
mention it if security or weather would be a factor in your decision. The
buffet and 777 brewpub at MSS can't be beat, but as others have mentioned,
without a gambling history, the rooms can be a little pricey these days.
One other note, I used an offer I got from the Plaza in June to secure a
room for my brother for 3 nights. I checked out the room and it was OK, did
not stink, maybe a thread-bare but hey, want do you want for free. It was a
bigger room than the standard room at MSS. That was in the north tower.

I stayed at the Vegas club last June. The north tower rooms are not
fancy but nice while the older south tower rooms tend to be a bit
shabby. Both are clean and comfortable. I'd pick the Vegas Club
over the Plaza.
If you stay at either and get a slot club card, the odds are very good
you'll get offers for free rooms about every 3 months.

It might help if you live within driving distance or give them some
play. I do neither and don't receive any free-night offers. Or maybe
they just don't like me.

You could be right. They probably market to Southern California,
although I haven't give them much play the two times I've stayed there
and I still get the offers.

| | Guest | Downtown hotels The Golden Nugget is 1st rate in every way and you'd both be delighted
there. The El Cortez is surprisingly nice if you can live with the
somewhat distant location. The Four Queens is nice but the rooms are a
little small. The renovated rooms at the Cal are nice, too. The Plaza,
sadly, really is a dump. It has a great view of the Fremont Experience
but that's where the positives end. When it's free I've stayed there
but I'd never stay there with a woman. | |
