| | Guest | Tours Going to Vegas in September. Thinking about a Grand Canyon tour . Can anyone
recommend a company or advise the ones not to take .
We do not want to rent a car . Should we book ahead or wait till we arrive
and see what specials may be available
Thanks

First you need to determine what part of the canyon you want to visit
and how you want to get there.
Do you want to see the South Rim or the West Rim? The South Rim has
the huge vistas you've seen in photos and TV shows. The West Rim is
closer to Vegas but is on Indian land outside the National Park; it's
where the Skywalk is. The views are not as expansive; some folks say
they're still impressive, while others have expressed disappointment
Do you want to fly or take a bus? You can bus all the way to the South
Rim but it's over 275 miles each way, which makes for a grueling day
trip. You can also fly to the South Rim by fixed-wing plane, then tour
the viewpoints by bus.
You can bus to the West Rim or fly by helicopter. Once you arrive
there are options for going out on the Skywalk, helicoptering down to
the canyon floor, rafting on the river, etc. You'll find various
packages available from tour operators.
A bus trip is cheaper and slower; a flight is, well, the opposite.

| | Guest | Tours I think we would like to do the south rim and a bus is not the way we want
to go . Too many hours on the road . If we want to bus it we would rent a
car . I think we would like a plane there, then a bus for me . My husband
would like a Helicopter ride when there . I have read on trip advisor alot
of negative comments about the fact that some of the tours are poorly run
and expensive . We don't mind paying for a good tour but do not want a rip
off tour

I hear there are friendly folks on the Strip who give away little
postcards for free. You don't even have to ask; they just hand them to
you as you walk by.

To answer your other question, if you decide on a plane trip to the
Canyon, you'd definitely want to book ahead and not wait til you get to
Vegas.
We've also heard that the plane ride from Vegas to Tusayan can be bumpy
sometimes. The tour planes are smaller and fly lower and slower than
commercial airliners, so they are more affected by turbulence. For
some people that's an issue. For others it's an added attraction!

Here's another option, if you have the time, but it would involve
renting a car. Google the Grand Canyon Railway. Train ride on a
"vintage" train from Williams AZ to the Canyon and back with
sightseeing time in between. Think it leaves kinda early in the
morning, so from Las Vegas the best thing would be to drive to
Williams the night before and stay in the hotel across from the train
station. Google Maps says it's about a 3-1/2 hour drive. There are
combination hotel-train packages available. Have seen it advertised a
lot, but never took the train myself - maybe somebody who has can
provide some more details.

We did this one time, on our way home from visiting the kids.
It's a quality package deal, the hotel is swell, the train
ride and cars are great and the folks are very hospitable.
