This might sound like overkill for just one visit, but since
her problem is persistent, perhaps a small investment now
might pay off in a lot less hassles when traveling in the future.
My suggestion would be to visit an HVAC metal shop and ask
them to bend up a couple aluminum risers. I'd have them made
so they could be "nested" for traveling- say inside a duffel
bag. At any hotel, your SIL could merely request a twin bed
in her room and then have somebody slip the risers under the
headboard to elevate that end of the bed. Chuck's suggestion
about pillows is also good, but sleeping propped up on a bunch
of pillows might be uncomfortable, where a traditional bed
with elevated headboard might feel more like "at home."
If your SIL uses a hospital bed and has it "jackknifed" to a
sitting-type position, she might also be more comfortable in a
traditional twin bed if she could have a foam shop manufacture
a wedge-shaped insert she could have someone slide beneath the
upper end of the mattress. If the mattress didn't fold well,
the wedge could be placed under the pad alone, elevating just
the upper part.
Finally, if money is not a big object, you might contact one
of the places that rent durable medical equipment to see if
they could actually deliver a hospital bed to a hotel for her
stay. Since there are numerous places renting oxygen
concentrators, scooters and the like, I bet that her situation
isn't unique. Perhaps the hotel's concierge could connect you
to a DME supplier that they've used reliably in the past.
