Ellis Island/Village Pub price increase FWIW, I had lunch today at T-Bird VP, which has several locations here
in town. Their location up on Farm Road was built almost like two
businesses under the same roof, separated by a solid wall and swinging
doors to either the bar or restaurant portion. The older one on Eastern
was a bit more open, but always had a partial divider between the bar
and restaurant. Today, at the Eastern location, there was a No Smoking
sign by the opening to the restaurant, but smoking was going on at the
large VP bar. I asked our waitress how they got around it and she said
that she'd heard they had gotten an exemption for a while, since they
intended to build a permanent wall to separate the two areas.
I walked around the bar, and think that it's a good way to get around
the smoking ordinance. The bar has its own bathrooms anyway, and they
are not shared with the restaurant area. Likewise, the kitchen has
doors to the restaurant portion, so if someone was to build a solid
wall, neither operation would be adversely impacted. Perhaps, this is
how PT's is going to handle it as well. So far, menu prices at T-Bird
are the same as always.
What seems odd, if my assumptions are correct, is that they would not be
permitted to serve food to someone at the bar. The bar permits smoking
and the only folks there are presumably able to tolerate folks smoking
around them. To me, it seems reasonable that since they're in a smoking
environment anyway, and could walk across the hall to a non smoking
restaurant if they chose, that they should be permitted to get food at
the bar if they choose. To tell a smoker, "NO, I won't permit you to
eat where you smoke," seems a tad bit over the line, so to speak,
