| | Guest | Matt Dusk As Roz and I have watched each episode of the abysmal Fox reality series
"The Casino," the one thing that has stood out for us is the voice of Matt
Dusk. Dusk, of course, sings the show's opening theme, "Two Shots of Happy,"
and that is also the name of the recently released CD by the young native of
Toronto, Canada.
Yes, his voice and talent have grown on us, and I'd bet a lot that this
singer has a bright future.
It's been amusing to watch his almost-weekly travails as he battles against
long odds to get a gig in the Golden Nugget's main showroom. But one thing
is certain, in my opinion: He WILL be a featured performer somewhere before
too long. He's too good not to be.
Anyway, in preparation for buying Dusk's CD, I checked out what people had
to say about him on Amazon.com. Not only does he get a good "professional"
editorial review on the site, but the six buyers who reviewed the CD all
gave it five stars out of five. Amazon shoppers know, I'm sure, that
negative reviews of CDs are not uncommon on the site, so I found this quite
impressive.
I wonder who among us are aware of the origin of the title song, "Two Shots
of Happy?" I think I may have heard this before, but if so I had forgotten
about it: The song was written expressly for Frank Sinatra by Bono of the
band U2, but Sinatra never had a chance to record it before he died. Matt
Dusk truly does it justice, and I think Old Blue Eyes would have been proud
to hear Dusk's treatment.

He's easily the best thing on that horrid show, but I'm concerned that he's
far too much of a Sinatra clone for major success. The vocals genre is
fossilized so he may never become all that successful. Will he be a
headliner, or just have a lounge show, or be essentially an impersonator?

Actually, I thought it was pretty obviously derived from standards such as
"One for my baby (One more for the road)." Not *bad*, but not exactly
original. Same problem here--trying to revive a genre that had run its
course by the 1960s.

Did someone report here that he's no longer at the GN?? I wouldn't blame
him...he'd never get a real shot at the big room...

| | Guest | Matt Dusk All I know is that the wife wants to see him in person. Of course he is no
longer at the GN. Gone to his web site to see if he will be performing when
we go to LV in November. His site only shows through the end of Aug. and he
is in Canada now.
Don't know if his talent will survive the current frenzy to purchase his CDs
but apparently they are selling well. I think he probably will get a
headliner position some time in the near future but again I don't think it
will be long lived.

Jill, he's apparently on good terms with the GN people.
Though he was already gone from the GN by the time the show started airing,
he's been back for an engagement at least once since then, and it probably
won't be the last time.

his great band and took some out of town guests..

great music!
Sat night, midnight, 3rd floor.

All of his songs are on Kazaa and all of the other file-sharing
programs.
There yours for the taking...

That is exactly correct information. I think Dusk does it well. The thing
that amazes me the most is that he has Sinatra's phrasing down cold.
Something that no other singer (that I've heard) has down. It's an amazing
job of doing that (wonderful) genre.
That said, I did not like his CD at all. His voice is great, but his backing
band sounds really thin. If you had put him in front of an orchestra, or
even a "big band" instrumental arrangement (BBVD) it would have been SO MUCH
better.
Best,
Frank | |
