| | Guest | Downtown The strip hotel casinos use themes that, for the most part, have nothing
to do with Las Vegas.
But, Downtown is the only place where there are actually Las Vegas
themed hotel casinos.
The new owners at the GN and Barrick seem determined to revive
old-school Las Vegas Downtown. This will be the only thing that saves
Fremont Street. And, it’s not a bad bet. There is something authentic
about Downtown. It’s not possible to buy or build authenticity.
Outside of Manhattan and Chicago, how many American cities see their
downtown as a serious tourist attraction? -- especially cities the size
of Las Vegas?

Yes, it's the item you realize that you forgot to pack for the trip.

| | Guest | Downtown I'm 32, single, no kids, and can afford to stay on the strip, but
prefer to stay Downtown. I used to stay at places like the Rio, NYNY,
Monte Carlo, Paris, etc, but the more I went, the more I realized I
was spending most of my time Downtown.
I've seen all that the strip has to offer, and it's awesome. And I
still hit the strip when I go. But when it comes time to do serious
gambling, I'm Downtown. The games are cheaper, the odds are better.
The casino's aren't as crowded.
I love that I can walk from The Plaza to the El Cortex in the time
that it would take me to walk from the Strip to the lobby on the
Bellagio. If I'm doing lousy at one place, I can test my luck at
another without having to waste 20 minutes or a cab ride getting
there.
There are some great Restaurants Downtown, most notably Hugo's Cellar.
And in spite of what the previous person wrote, I enjoy the Freemont
Street Experience, in spite of having seen the same light shows a
thousand times. I don't feel claustrophbic at all. In fact, the cover
helps shade Freemont Street from the heat. And walking down the road,
seeing all the boutiques and people selling stuff, hearing music being
played, well I like that kind of stuff.
The entertainment in the Casino's could be better Downtown, I haven't
seen a show Downtown since Amazing Jonathan at the Nugget a few years
back, unless you count the free Elvis show at the Fitz, which by the
way, has become my casino of choice these days. LVC is great for the
money too, but no Let it Ride there anymore, so that's why I moved to
Fitzgeralds.
A lot of people have such bad misconceptions about Downtown, but hey,
it's there loss, right?

| | Guest | Downtown Got back from Vegas a few days ago and we had a great time. Stayed at El
Cortez, I love that place. Hit my Aces everyday for 200. Saw Jackie(the
owner)playing poker everyday. Went to Santa Fe. I put 20.00 in a double
bonus 25 cent machine and hit 4 2's for 100 bucks, and then 4 aces
almost back to back. Walked out with 500.00. Then I made the BIG
mistake. I went to the strip. Lost it all and then some. Went to bed and
decided it was going to be a cheap drunk day. What else? 40 cent keno at
The El Cortez. Free drinks, live keno, and people to talk to.I played the
7's straight down for a five spot, and after 6 games, I hit. $400.00. I
thought I was in heaven. I had a great time, won lots of money, and
still came home with no money. But who cares,it was so much fun.

Never stayed at The Plaza, but after staying at the Vegas Club,
I assume that The Plaza has better rooms.
