The eventual port for the Super Ferry on Hawaii Island is at
Kawaihae, which was explained to me ---because the military would use
it from Pohakuloa Military Camp/Base for transport.

Kawaihae is approximately 2 hours from Kailua-Kona, and probably about
the same from Hilo. It is closer to Pohakuloa. In all fairness
Kawaihae is a good deep water harbor but I think Hilo would be as
well. Certainly the population center is not at Kawaihae.

It makes sense to use Kawaihae in part because it's the closest Big
Island port to Honolulu and Kahului. The SuperFerry isn't too slow,
but it's slower than driving, so let 'em drive the rest of the way.

I think some folks are worried that SuperFerry = Strykers or something.
Me... I don't care so much.

Eh? Okay, maybe it's not slower than driving, if it takes you 2
hours to get from Kawaihae to Kona! Should take 45 minutes if it's
not rush hour. ;)

Than Hilo is? By a *little* bit... not even a mile difference, I
think.

And a bit more....

Just watched a show on the construction and sea trials of the Hawaii Super Ferry on the National Geographic Television Channel. If you haven't seen the ship and want to see what its all about, a re-run is scheduled for September 28th (2 PM Central US Time) on the same channel via Dishnetwork.
