Default Nobu Waikiki

Notice in the paper that the restaurant will opening at
the Parc Hotel next to the Halekulani. Looks like that
whole area will be more upscale. It's location,
location, location as some say. And Nobu is quoted as
saying he's finally found a good location.

I've never been to a Nobu restaurant. What's so good
about it? Nobu started out blending Japanese and
Peruvian flavors where he first immigrated. Then he
finally got well known when he opened a Hollywood
Restaurant. His Waikiki restaurant will have a local
Hawaii boy returning to manage the restaurant. But has
anybody been to a Nobu restaurant? What's the big deal?

Initially at least, there will be the snob appeal. The prices will
probably be astronomical, for one thing. Yes, Nobu (last name
Matsuhisa?) has the reputation of combining the freshness of Peruvian
and Japanese seafood cuisines. His New York establishment has been a
very big draw. I have never been there, but it has been written up in
every culinary magazine on the planet. That is no small thing.

The interesting thing about Honolulu is that people there know Japanese
cuisine so intiimately that many might not be all that impressed, but
why not wish the new restaurant well? Even if many won't pay the
prices, it might turn out to be a very nice addition to the dining
scene in the city.

I have an ambition to eventually stay a couple of nights at the
Halekulani. If I ever do, I'll try to look in on Nobu. If it's still
there....

There is a Nobu here in NYC - so expensive and overrated. A lot of celebrities have been spotted there, which is where I imagine its popularity and snob appeal come from. I'm not going to say that it's not worth going to, but you should be aware of what you should come to expect.

Yes. There are some prices listed in the article. I
agree that they're too high even for Waikiki. IIRC some
of the sushi were like $8 EACH. But the location of
Nobu is now more upscale-- which is saying something
for the Outrigger Hotels nearby in the development.
And I guess there are visitors with the kala to dine at
Nobu.
