Default Kayaking on Kauai

Aloha from California,

We are returning to the island in June and I am recovering from a
broken leg (bicycle accident). I would like to get some kayaking time
in but do not want to do a tour where you have to hike, swim and
basically do a triathelon just to paddle. We will be at out place in
Lihue and I just don't where to just simply rent and be able to launch
locally without a hastle.

Mahalo,

Tom

Try Nawiliwili Bay and paddle up Huleia Stream past the Menehune
fishponds and up to where Indiana Jones made his escape in a seaplane
under a hail of arrows from the natives in the "Raiders of the Lost
Ark". You can launch almost anywhere in the Bay or further up the Bay.

Buy some inflatables on the mainland and bring 'em with you. They don't
paddle as smoothly as the hard shells but you'll save some money and
have an easier time taking them in your rental car trunk to other areas
on the island such as Wailua River of Hanalei Stream. If you get
adventurous you can try Napali but that is usually best done as a
one-way trip from Haena to Polihale going with the prevailing trade
winds and current. I strongly suggest reading one of Audrey
Sutherland's paddling books as she's done them all and has a lot of good
tips.
