Ah jeez...there goes the downtown neighborhood. So much for my normal
route (Queen to Alakea to Beretania) to get to so many of the people I
do business with. Fortunately, there are alternatives but construction
will really mess with traffic for a long time.
It really is sad. If I want to experience Seattle, I'll go to Seattle.
Ditto for any other big city experience. I moved here for the Hawaii
experience. Most tourists visit here for the Hawaii experience. Trump's
highrise certainly isn't the first nor will it be the last on Oahu. I
just hope our local government isn't swayed into making exceptions for
him because of his "celebrity" status and the potential of all the press
that Hawaii might get.
Now, if Trump wants to have a presence in Hawaii let him build something
along the lines of the Kona Village Resort. Of course, that wouldn't add
to his coffers like a highrise.

"Okay, you are not happy with what is happening. What is your
solution?"
Certainly not what we see now. And NOT having an instant synopsis of a
definite conclusive solution is not any justification for NOT lamenting
the fast destruction of these fragile islands.
The apathetic mindset displayed by too many is deplorable:
"Well, if ya DON"T have another option, if ya CAN'T elucidate an
instant solution, we MUST allow rampant development!"

it was him (or so I heard, supposedly on Oprah, saying the best place
to invest in real estate was Puna on the Big Island) who caused the
Puna real estate prices quintuple in a year too ...

If you mean Block J, you must be referring to the parcel that the car
sales family bought and will develop. Think about how cars are sold
and then if the sales hype is unexpected. Any $99 down and $99 a month
deals? <G> Anyway, been wondering for 20 years plus when those who
live in Kukui Plaza with the Diamond Head view would get their view
blocked.

Really surprised more condos aren't going up given the sky high prices
of condos and single family homes. If big buildings have to go up in
Hawaii, it should be in urban Honolulu. The City & County has been
trying to get someone to develop that site for more than 20 years (that
I can remember). I remember one developer even came up with a
hare-brained scheme to build a stock exchange there to take advantage
of the time zone difference between NY and Asia (sounds so silly 15
years later). One artist rendition even had a gargantuan building
straddling Pali Hwy with the cars going underneath! That would have
been something.
Looks like mayor Harris' desperate scrounging for money in the last
couple years to pay for his more frivolous projects finally got the
site on the development track. He sold taxpayer-owned property to the
private developer last year. Who knows if the City retained any rights
or was it a lameduck sweetheart deal? You think the developer is going
to make money given this real estate market? Duh.

Change it seems to me is something that has occurred throughout humans
existence on earth, and I do not see anyway to "change" that. But "change"
is both positive and negative. The problem we all have is that we dislike
the "changes" that are occuring that we think are "bad", but we ignore the
"changes" that are "good". We tend to accentuate the negatives.

I wonder how much more the urban Honolulu infrastructure can support.
There's always some underground system in a state of emergency repair.

Yes, I am aware.

No, none at all. | |

I think it is a whole lot more complicated then that. Part of it has to do
with people "wanting" to come here...would you stop people who want to live
in Hawaii, from comming to live in Hawaii? I think there is also the
problem of how you maintain a growing economy with a stagnant population. I
do not know if that can be accomplished...though I am not certain. Then of
course there is the natural cycle of birth and death. If more people are
born then die, then by definition you have growth in population don't you,
and they have to live somewhere don't they? Sounds like what you are saying
is, "but not in my backard". Isn't that a universal problem, we say we want
to solve a problem, but we do not want it in our backyard?
