TUITION INCREASE - da University of Hawaii system
IN PARTICULAR - HAWAI'I COMMUNITY COLLEGE
WHY?
BECAUSE they wanna charge just as much as the best colleges are
charging.
SO WHAT?
What this means is that when the next generation wanna go to college -
maybe - they no can because goin be to expensive. You when get it?
SO WHAT?
So what you goin do about it?

Not sure which colleges you think are the best but assuming you mean
public universities like Berkeley or UCLA, UH still very cheap by
comparison. I think resident tuition in the UC system is around $6,500
per year now. CSU tuition not as high but going up too.

Had to take out loans as part of a financial aid package.

The UH BOR should consider basing future tuition increases on a formula
tied to the cost of running each campus or the UH system as a whole.
If costs go up x%, tuition goes up x%. Even with a year or year and a
half lag, it would at least be less arbitrary. Goes without saying
that financial aid for students who need it should be a top priority.
If you want to know where charges will go up dramatically in the UH
system, just watch what happens when they start bringing the dorms at
UH Manoa up to standard. Cheap on-campus dorms will be a thing of the
past. | |

Okay, you seem not to like what is happening. But
rather than stick your neck out and propose a
"solution", you seem to want us to stick our neck
out and propose a solution?
But on a more serious note, how can any of us
propose a solution, if we do not know what is the
cause of the need to increase tuitions? I have an
opinion about why the need is there, but I have no
idea whether my opinion is correct or not. And if
it is wrong, then my proposed solution to the
percevied problem is also going to be wrong. | |

Just read that Stanford will have tuition-free policy for any student
that qualifies for the school *if* parents make less than $45,000 a
year.
Understand Harvard has had similar policy in place for some time.

Stanford is running about 80k/year now or some such ...
hardly comparable. (But, as somebody put it: probably still one
of the cheapest ways of living in that area)

$80,000 per year.. to study at Stanford University..
SHOCKS me.
I wonder how this exorbitant cost can be justified.
most of the buildings and equipment is already paid for..
there are no outstanding mortages.. there are in fact
huge endowments and gifts by alumni and corporations.
I have often reviewed the subjects covered in my personal
graduate and post-graduate academic history.. attempting
to decide the revelance and value of the numerous
subjects I studied to living in the contemporary times.
... and I found them wanting..
I questioned many of my contemporaries on the subject..
and they too confirmed my discovery.
Perhaps it is time that the content of the university
curriculum be reviewed.. to make it more revelant to
living in the 21st century.

John, would you be willing to give us a "down to earth," and maybe a
step-by-step, picture of how to get it going?

RESPONDING TO:
Quante981 Apr 14, 3:25 pm
Not sure which colleges you think are the best but assuming you mean
public universities like Berkeley or UCLA, UH still very. . . .
The comparison is being made to higher education intuitions in the
Pacific and West Coast Sates. It has been observed that many
mainlanders are enrolling into the UH system BECAUSE not only is
tuition cheaper here but also living expenses too.
Your other concerns are complex issues that would require a lengthy
respond so we're asking you, and all other interested parties to
attend one &/or both of the following events.
1. TONIGHT county hearing regarding this tuition hike in Hilo at 7:30
pm at the County building (between Long's Drug Store and the State of
Hawaii building).
2. ON OAHU. Thursday, April 21 at 10:30 am, Windward Community
College Board of Regents meeting. President McClain is presenting the
tuition increase request to the Board. WE NEED YOUR VOICE, your public
support at this meeting BECAUSE we are asking the Board of Regents to
NOT accept this request.
PARTENTS, GRANDPARENTS, concurrent students and parents, and so on -
all those who are concern about the higher education opportunity of our
younger generations, you can make a difference on April 21, 2005 by
being physically there, you can be an even greater force by testifying
on behave of our voiceless children. To testify send in your name to
the Board of Regents to be put on the agenda.

OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO STUDENTS STUDYING HAWAIIAN TRADITION
It seems to me that this tuition increase issue would be of speical
interest to you because WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GET THE KNOWLEDGE YOU SEEK
BUT FROM YOUR OWN?
