there is a really good one at the polynesian cultural center
i would name this as the best cultural activity experience on the island
it is a fun way to spend a day learning things at your own pace
and then you finish the day with a luau ... or you could just go for the
luau
lots to see and do there ... you can take part or simply watch
but you learn a lot about polynesia including hawaii
you begin to understand more about the history instead of just it's beauty
enjoy ... emmett j. | |

The prices at the PCC tend to be a little steep and they do try to
charge for every little thing at the individual attractions. It is an
entertaining and educational experience, though. I haven't partaken of
the luau so I can't comment on that. However, depending on when you
visit you might check some of the local papers to see if any of the
local churches are having any benefit lu There may not be as much
"entertainment" per se but the food is authentic and the spirit is
geniune. | |

Forgot to mention that the Kawaiha'o Church in downtown Honolulu usually
has one every year on or around Kamehameha Day (June 11). There usually
is entertainment from a halau or two, musicians and church members,
along with a crafts fair. Reasonably priced and benefits the church
too.
Kaumakapili Church in Kalihi also has one annually sometime later in the
summer (July I think). They've been holding it annually for over 30
years and usually sell out. Tamashiro fishmarket next door (itself
worth checking out to get a glimpse, scent and taste of what Hawaii
eats) generously donates the produce, fish and limu for the lomi salmon
and poke - doesn't get any better than this!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Here's the Kaumakapili Church Chicken Long Rice
Recipe, simple but ono:
5 pounds chicken thighs
1 3-inch-long piece of ginger, scrubbed and smashed
2 tablespoons Hawaiian salt, or more to taste
1/2 pound long rice (bean threads)
Green onions for garnish
Cover chicken pieces with water in a pot. Add ginger and s Bring to
a boil, then simmer about 1 hour, or until cooked through.
Meanwhile, soak long rice in water until soft.
Remove cooked chicken from pot, reserving the broth. Debone chicken and
discard skin. Shred meat.
Drain long rice, then add to reserved broth. Stir in chicken. Garnish
with green onion. | |

for example, I've bought some tickets at $17 each for a
fund raiser this month on the 23rd. Like those
all-you-can-eaters. There is some entertainment, but
strictly amateur stuff. What visitors might like is the
luau by the Ihilani on the old Campbell estate. Liked
the arts and crafts that they featured.

If you have strong negative feelings about the Mormon church, you should
probably avoid PCC -- they operate it.

Can you eat and watch the show in peace, or does the entertainment come out
into the audience and get people to participate in their show? We went to
one in Maui last year in Makena and they did that - which is great if you're
an extrovert, otherwise it felt a little annoying...

There is no peace at a rambuncious entertainment filled luau fulla
hundreds of people eating. But they do not pull ya outta the chair to
do a fake haole hula. (the talent stay on da stage thing/area...) You
are left alone to grind in relative peace. When you choose to arise,
you choose. and as said, it will be for more grindz. if ya want. if
not, vacate. hele on to anodda village. or not. ainokea.
