It works well when there's just the two of us. Honi kakou, on the other
hand, would be a bit overboard. and honi a'u or hon ia'u seem a bit
narcissistic - not to mention lonely. US is an appropriate term when
we're talking about nations in the singular.
And here you thought Hawaiian could be confusing! (vbg)

Mahalo for your mana'o. I figured that there was a good chance the
people whose web pages I saw that phrase on didn't know proper
Hawaiian, which is why I hedged my comment to Sandra as I did.
