    Default Crete - Advice please

    Hi Tim,

I am a Greek-American and travel to Greece every year. About 3 years ago
I spent 9 days on Crete staying several days each in Hania, Iraklion,
and Saint Nicholas (Elounda Beach Resorts). Hania is a very quaint and
rich in history a lovely city a lot like Italy. Iraklion is full of
history, Knossos and many wonderful sites. Saint Nicholas, Elounda Beach
Resort (there are several) is where I stayed and it is pricey but very
luxurious, wonderful beach, swimming and all kinds of water sports.
Sept. is an ideal time to go, as they have had a very hot summer, and
should start to cool a bit, but will still be very summer like and can
enjoy beach and water sports. Hope these tips have been of some help to
you, have a great time in Crete, sure you will love it.

    Regards from the U.S.
    Barbara

By the way just to set the record straight, it is me you are quoting, not
    Martin (whoever he is).

Would the real Martin please step forward?

    Hi Mike,
The islands are usually safe, as I have accidentally left a Nikon
f100 and lens in my moped basket on the island of Sifnos. It was
still there when I returned two hours later.
Athens, however, is a different story.
Last year, I was taking a group of students from our hotel in
Monastiraki/Psiri to the airport to go sailing on the island of Leros
in the Dodekanesa. I had just given the lecture about "wearing your
equipment when the taxi arrived. A thief snuck in behind me and stole
about 10,000 Euros of equipment including my camera bag, hi end
digital camera, many lenses, computer, passport, backup drives and my
precious, irreplaceable black book. My suspicion is that the hotel
and the taxi were in on the deal. The police were of absolutely no
value whatsoever. "OK. You lost camera, computer, passport. Go to
Embassy. His partner said "Pame," and they took off leaving me with
my head in my handssitting on the street in the morning light in front
    of Hotel Cecil.
The rule is you wear your equipment. Thieves exist in every major
city. The islands are somewhat safer.

Well, as I said in another thread, I spent some time in Evvia earlier this
Year (just in time it seems) and from there took the ferry to Skiros.

Next year (if they haven't burnt the whole country by then) I was thinking of
taking a trip along the northern mainland via Thessaloniki and Kavala to
Alexandropolis, and then taking the ferry to Samothrace island. I believe the
Sanctuary of the Great Gods is a site worth seeing. I really like these
    off-the-beaten-track places.
