Travel from within Europe to Greece (Athens)
I am looking into options for a long-term trip (at least one year out at
this point) to Athens from Paris. We are going to Paris for a family
event and want to extend the trip to include seeing family in Greece.
What do you all recommend for transportation from Paris to Greece? I
suppose we could fly which would be easy (?) and quick, but probably not
much fun. We are thinking of driving from Paris to Athens so we could
see some other countries. Good idea? Bad idea? Best options? Also, I
have heard that rail can be a good mode.
I appreciate any comments on this from the group.
Thanks as always!

I should probably mention that we will have one European with us on our
journey from Paris to Athens. She is a native Greek speaker and
understands French.
Thanks again!

I would drive. I used to travel from Greece to the UK and back 2 or 3
times a year when I lived on Paros and the one thing I miss now is the
opportunity to visit so many places in europe on the way. I should add
that I have moved back to the UK now and I do not have the time to drive
now that I only get two weeks holiday at a time.

Driving can be very good if you have plenty of time and are prepared to
take it easily. Most people who do it seem to want to get there as
quickly as possible, which seems rather pointless to me. Going flat out
on motorways for three days is not much fun at all.
Last year we drove from the north of England through France, down to
Brindisi in the south of Italy and then by ferry to Igoumenitsa in
Greece. This took about seven days in all, and was on the whole very
enjoyable. In France we kept mainly to minor roads which we found much
more pleasant than in Italy where the rather poor motorways are really
the only option. We plan to go again in May, but this time we'll try
taking a shorter route via Germany and Austria to Venice where we'll
again take the ferry to Igoumenitsa.
