Zakynthos (by ferry from Mainland)

Hello All
I'm going to be on the mainland in the Xylokastron area for a few weeks and
I'm considering a couple islands to visit and one of them is Zakynthos. From
the web it appears most places to stay are rather expensive. Any suggestions
to a budget location on the island and if you have ever taken the ferry from
Killyni what was that experience like. Ideally it would be great if I can
just get off the boat and find a place without making a reservation. I may
also bring my mountain bike unless the bus to Killyni won't make room for
it.
My real goal there is to check out Shipwreck Beach so I only want to stay on
the island for about 3 days for that purpose After that I may check out
Kephallonia but I'll make that decision on the run. Thanks for your help.
